All About… Hillingdon Narrowboats Association

It may be just a few miles over the Harrow boundary at Hillingdon, but I think we’d consider this well worth mentioning here on iharrow.com. Hillingdon Narrowboats Association offer affordable boating for schools, voluntary organisations, community groups, nursing homes and clubs. And if that wasn’t enough, they also cater for families, friends, days out, birthday trips, corporate and team building days as well.

With four boats currently – Pisces (below, blue), Star, Spirit and Theo – sleeping 8-10 people (and Spirit, below, green, being wheelchair accessible with electric lifts at the front and rear of the boat), you can rent boats for anything from a few hours in the afternoon or a summer’s evening, up to several days. If you want to go from the HNA Boathouse in Harefield up to Birmingham and back, you’d need to allow at least a couple of weeks – boatmen used to do the trip, one way, in five days, but you’re in no hurry – are you?!? It’s around 135 miles, and something like 160 locks to navigate – and currently, due to the UK’s drought conditions, some locks are operating on restricted hours, rather than being open all day long.
Each boat is over 22 metres long and two metres wide, and they’re all equipped with:

  • a galley with hot and cold fresh water
  • an oven and hob, pans and utensils
  • fridge
  • stowaway tables
  • beds and central heating
  • showers
  • flush toilets

For residential cruises, you’ll just need supply your own crockery, cutlery and bedding.
