All about St Luke’s Hospice in Harrow

St Luke’s is the local hospice for Harrow and Brent. They care for people whose illnesses are no longer curable, enabling them to achieve the best possible quality of life during the final stages of their illness. They care for patients through their in-patient unit, out-patient clinics, and day care unit, as well as in their own homes through the Hospice at Home and Community Palliative Care Teams.

Coming to terms with a serious illness can be difficult and distressing. Everyone in the family, including friends can be affected, so the hospice and St Luke’s own staff and volunteers provide a warm, friendly and supportive environment in which everyone feels welcome.

More than 750 people volunteer their time to St Lukes, in roles such as gardeners, drivers, fundraisers, administrators and, of course, the countless staff who help run St Luke’s 12 charity shops in and around Harrow. If you’d like to know more about working as a volunteer for St Lukes, click here.

St Luke’s Hospice shops provide a vital source of income to support the free care given by the charity, and all the profits from the shops – in 2009 amounting to £530,000 – go directly to the Hospice.

The shops are staffed by a professional manager and assistant manager who are supported by volunteers and are all open Monday to Saturday 9.30 to 5pm. The shops sell a wide range of high-quality secondhand goods all reasonably priced. Some of the goods on offer may be new but all goods sold in our shops – apart from the St Luke’s Christmas Cards – are donated. St. Luke’s lottery tickets are available to purchase in all shops.

Ten of the shops sell clothing, bric a brac, books, household items, unwanted gifts, jewellery and accessories, CDs, DVDs, videos and toys. Donations of items are always welcome.

Some shops specialise, for example, Kenton has a lot of furniture, Pinner sells designer wear on a 50:50 basis, and Harrow Weald has a large selection of bridal wear.
