Bob Says: Supporting the Royal British Legion

bob_blackman3The Royal British Legion has thanked Bob Blackman, MP for Harrow East, for taking the time to meet new Legion Area Manager, Ryan Allain.

The Legion is the leading provider of welfare for the Armed Forces community and last week local MP Bob Blackman attended an event in the Houses of Parliament dedicated to showcasing the Legion’s work throughout the London area. Bob used the opportunity to discuss with Mr Allain the changing face of Armed Forces welfare provision in the local community.

Legion beneficiaries Jeff Button and David Forbes were in attendance to speak first-hand about the difficulties they experienced after leaving the Services and how the Legion was able to assist them.

Mr Allain, the Legion’s Area Manager, said, “It was great to see Bob; we really appreciated him making the time to drop in. Many people don’t realise that we spend £1.6 million every week in direct welfare support for the Serving and ex-Service community and their families, so we were delighted to tell Bob about the range of services we provide. The Legion continues to be active in London and over the last 12 months, my team handled 827 welfare cases and issued Immediate Needs Grants totalling some £380,000”.

Bob Blackman MP said, “It is vital that we as a nation honour the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces and I’m proud to support the work of The Royal British Legion. I recently wrote to Harrow Council regarding the Royal British Legion’s Community Covenant, as Harrow is one of only a handful of councils nationwide yet to sign up, in order to expedite this. I am pleased that there will now be a formal signing on Tuesday 17th September and that Harrow Council will be demonstrating its support for our brave service personnel and their families.”

The Royal British Legion provides care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces, past and present, and their families. As the nation’s leading Armed Forces charity, the Legion spends £1.6 million a week, or £84 million a year on vital welfare work, providing social, emotional and financial care and support to serving and ex-Service people and their families. Approximately 9 million people in the UK are eligible for the Legion’s support and we are proud to serve those in need, today and for the rest of their lives.
