Annual Mayoral tree planted in Harrow Recreation Ground

harrow_council_logoThe Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Nana Asante, continued the tradition of the Mayoral Tree planting in Harrow Rec commemorating her mayoral year.

The tradition – in its 23rd year – sees the borough’s first citizen plant a tree every spring in an area of the park named The Mayors Avenue.

With the help of Norbury School pupils, the mayor planted a cherry tree on Thursday 13th March.

Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Nana Asante said: “I am extremely delighted to mark my mayoral year with this tradition which goes back over 20 years. I would like to thank everyone who helped with the tree planting, in particular Norbury School who made the day one to remember. It is the first cherry tree that has been planted here, and I hope that it will brighten Mayors Avenue with blossom every spring and that visitors to the park will enjoy the cherries when fruit is ready to be picked.”

I wonder how many of the 23 trees are the originals and how many have been replaced, due to vandalism or disease. I used to work in Harrow Rec in the late 90’s, and remember having to put in a couple of the trees to replace ones the vandals snapped off.
