Bus Lane Signs in Harrow “Confusing”

buslane_signAccording to an article on the BBC’s News website today “councils in Medway in Kent and Camden and Harrow in London have also refused to make changes after adjudicators found their signage around bus lanes to be confusing…”

No surprise there, really. Harrow made over half a million pounds in issuing bus-lane tickets in 2011-12, so of course, there’s little incentive. In fact, the offence of being in a bus lane ranked the third most profitable, according to our analysis late last year.

The BBC’s article continues, “In Hertfordshire, the county council took a different stance and refunded £1.3m to motorists after an adjudicator criticised a sign. The council says it wasn’t under a legal obligation to refund the penalties but felt it was the right thing to do.”

To add to the confusion, some bus lanes permit motorcyclists in them, whilst others don’t, the only difference being a pictograph of a motorbike on the bus lane sign, along with that of a cyclist and a bus, as well as times. Given that the motorcyclist is already looking out for potholes (many), errant drivers (from experience, usually minicab drivers) failing to indicate whilst changing late, as well as the usual hazards of pedestrians, cyclists, etc, it’s often difficult to be sure that a bus lane is a safe place to ride. Result? Most simply keep out of it, preferring to filter down the outside of traffic.

Thanks to BM for the tip.

Well we all know Harrow deliberately rips off the motorist to subsidise their extreme incompetance , they should get an award for it . thieving rats .

every driver avoids bus lanes out of courtesy but there are so many diff times 7-7 7=10am 4-7pm every town has different hrs . Except the lane outside harrow police station which is 24 hrs ( inc sat sun) and camera to issue fines / Narrow road crammed with heavy traffic and narrow traffic light T JUNCTION You have to use 3 eyes to travel this OBSTACLE MILE and when you have mastered it day or night you hope not to get a fine

Last year my regularly serviced car needed two new rear springs and two new tyres that were ok except for damage to the walls but had hardly any wear , the mechanic said all was because of the bad condition of our roads ie the pot holes , we really are being robbed and insulted , by our bleeders sorry leaders . .

Just look at the stupid short bus lane outside Watrose Harrow Weald if you want to turn left by the postbox or just after it is so dangerous , if there is a bus Taxi or bike flying down that lane as often is .
i was told by a councillor that the bus people were allowed to designe that whole mess along that stretch .
also if you use the bus lane at the allowed times people pull out of Waitrose car park in front of you deliberately then abuse you for being in the bus lane , sooo dangerous,,,, that happens to me all the time as i turn left by the post box o go home .
