Cllr Husain Akhtar – Changes Party Again

husain_akhtarYet again, Cllr Husain Akhtar has changed political party within Harrow Council. He has provided a statement below:

It was good that I defied the Conservative group whip last November and left the group when I couldn’t vote against Cllr Thaya Idaikkadar for the position of Harrow Council leader because who he is (Sri Lankan).

However, it was not good to join the Labour Group on the council (February 2013) which has serious conflicts and division, as I later found out, and which have led to rather unstable administration of the Harrow Council. The breakaway Independent Labour Group (ILG), now in administration, perhaps means well but lacks confidence, courage and experience to make difficult but right decisions and is therefore Tory driven (more than working together as it ought to be). For example, the Tory leadership determines who goes on the cabinet.

(The ILG cabinet members (portfolio holders) get £19,000 each and the two Tory non-executive members of the cabinet get £13,000 each per year in the special responsibility allowances (SRA). Plus most Tory councillors chair committees and panels and get additional allowances – interesting arrangements! I was not on the cabinet nor received any SRA)

I tried but found it almost impossible to stand on the platform of justice and truth under the oppressive political regimes. Therefore, I have reached the conclusion that the best way to serve residents and the community in an honest and effective way is to work as an independent councillor which I will be till May 2014.

Please, judge me, if needed, in the light of my Council work as well as the support and service that I provide to the residents. I would also like to take this opportunity to reassure that I never tried to or will join UKIP or
BNP.

Right. Glad that’s cleared up, then.

How can anybody take Cllr Akhtar seriously, when he’s in and out of the different political groups faster than a fiddler’s elbow
