Cllr Husain Akhtar Leaves Conservative Group

Throws tantrum, jumps ship, toys everywhere

Cllr Husain Akhtar, who was elected as the Conservative representative for Cannons Ward in 2007, last night jumped ship from Harrow’s Conservative group to stand as an independent. Speaking after the event, he said he felt unable to vote for Susan Hall, leader of the Conservative group, to become leader of the Council.

The newly-independent Cllr Akhtar said: “The Conservative group, under the present leadership, relies on victimization and being uncooperative. What is needed, in my opinion, is for the council groups to work together to make sure our policies benefit the residents.”

But surely, there must be some mistake. Isn’t the role of the opposition group, by definition, to oppose?

Cllr Susan Hall, Leader of the Conservative Group, said: “…my initial thoughts are very much with the residents of Canons who elected a Conservative to represent them… Labour don’t have a divine right to make decisions without scrutiny.”
