Cllr Husain Akhtar Threatens to Wipe Out Labour in Harrow

labour_roseCllr Husain Akhtar, Secretary of the Independent Labour Group in Harrow, appears have got into an argument with the London Regional Director of the Labour Party over his membership of the party, a row which culminates with a threat to wipe Harrow out in Labour in the 2014 and 2015 elections.

Documents sent to iharrow.com over the weekend includes emails as well as other written correspondence between Cllr Akhtar and others on the issue of his continuing membership of the Labour Party.

On May 9, 2013, the Chief Whip of the Labour group, Cllr Mrinal Choudhury, wrote to Cllr Akhtar warning him that as he’d resigned from the Harrow Labour Group, it was likely that he’s be ineligible to remain a member of the Labour Party.

[pullquote align=”right” textalign=”left|center|right” width=”30%”]”…the Labour Party is already in serious danger of being wiped off in Harrow now, and in 2014 and 2015 because of the local arrogance!”[/pullquote]Cllr Akhtar wrote back on May 12 to point out that he believed he fulfilled the conditions of membership of the Party, and would not, therefore, take too kindly to being booted out.

May 14, 2013, see Alan Olive, London Regional Director of the Labour Party get in touch. According to Mr Olive the rules are quite clear that elected members of the local authority who do not register as members of the Labour Group are “…ineligible to be or to remain a party member.” It goes on to remind Cllr Akhtar that unless he returns to the group within a 14-day period, his “…exclusion from the Labour Party will be automatic…”

Cllr Akhtar disagrees: “I will challenge your interpretation of the Labour Party rules – let the judiciary decide who is right and who is wrong – being father of a solicitor, I know what I’m talking about!” He continues that, “… the Labour Party is already in serious danger of being wiped off in Harrow now, and in 2014 and 2015 because of the local arrogance!” To add weight, he copies his correspondence to Ed Miliband, Harriet Harman, Sadiq Khan, Keith Vaz, and a whole load of other people.

He closes off his letter with what might be a veiled threat: “Sad that you missed the opportunities to intervene previously and before the Harrow volcano erupted – a matter that might interest your line managers!”

Cllr. Akhtar has been a member of every other party in Harrow at one time or another. Perhaps he should start his own party?

Cllr Akhtar is a joke! The quicker he is booted out the better for all!

All things good, I take it when you say “all” you mean everyone, I am a member of “all” and I disagree, so you are wrong when you say “all”. Why are you talking rubbish.

The gentleman seems to be out of control. Why is he so angry? I am not sure if having a son with certain qualifications automatically means you have his knowledge.

The leader of Independent Labour has still not explained what caused him to take the very unusual number of actions he has taken and I think the quicker a statement and explanation is made to us, the people of Harrow, the better for everyone.

His assuming it was racist is not good enough. I think we deserve some proof.

Right now my confidence in them is diminishing. Before long they will have lost all credibility, particularly if more of these aggressive letters come to light.
