Construction jobs showcase in Harrow

Harrow residents are invited to a showcase of employment and training opportunities in the borough’s construction industry next week.

Organised by Harrow Council, the Construction Futures event will feature major construction companies alongside niche employers, professional organisations and training providers. It takes place at Harrow Civic Centre on Wednesday 21st September and is a chance to learn about the range of careers in construction.

The event will offer information on trade and professional jobs, from bricklayers to quantity surveyors. Visitors can also try their hand at practical construction tasks such as bricklaying, plastering and decorating outside the Civic Centre library. Vacancies on local construction projects will be advertised.

Exhibitors will include female-only electricians firm, Elecchicks, encouraging more women to pursue careers in the trades.

The event is for all Harrow residents from school-leavers making further education choices and unemployed construction workers, to adults considering a change in career.

Last week the Council agreed to re-tender its multi-million pound housing repairs and maintenance contract and will encourage local employers to bid for the work.

Cllr Keith Ferry, portfolio holder for planning and economic development on Harrow Council, said:

“Construction Futures is about promoting Harrow construction jobs and training to Harrow residents.

“While the industry is still feeling the effects of the downturn, there are opportunities on projects like the Rayners Lane development. The Council wants local people to be first in the queue.

“That includes encouraging more women to consider a career path in the industry and promoting the huge range of professional jobs involved.

“Whether you are starting your career, are unemployed or even looking for a new challenge, come and find out how your future could lie in the construction industry.”

Leah Burman and Christine Vaghela set up Elecchicks last year. Leah said:

“We are very delighted to be a part of the Construction Futures event this year.

It is a fantastic opportunity for us to meet and encourage other women who are interested in learning a new trade but feel too shy to pursue a career in their chosen industry.”
