Ealing, Brent and Harrow to Share Library Services?

According to Ealing Council’s website, the council cabinet has agreed to work with Harrow and Brent councils to try to find new ways of reducing the costs of delivering library and leisure services.

The council needs to reduce its overall budget by £85million by 2014 and is investigating a number of options to make savings.

Meanwhile in Harrow, Councillor David Perry, Portfolio holder for community and cultural services, said: “We will now look at each of the recommendations in more detail to ensure these services continue to grow and develop. With less money available, we have had to look at innovative ways of making this happen.”

Already, the public have started responding to the idea: “‘Merging two libraries into one’ – don’t you mean one will move to a new site and the other will close?”

If all the recommendations are realised, the council anticipates savings of up to £345,000 per year.
