Free electric blankets and slippers for vulnerable as “Winter Warmer” campaign launches

harrow_council_logoWITH winter biting, Harrow Council has just launched its “winter warmer” campaign to target vulnerable older people with offers of electric blankets, slippers and basic home insulation.

Council officers yesterday (Mon 23rd Dec) began calling more than 400 residents who are known to be potentially vulnerable to check on their welfare – and offer practical help.

The check calls and visits are part of a three-month package of aid which includes:

  • Free electric blankets and slippers to keep warm
  • Putting in basic insulation – for example tape around gaps in doors and windows
  • Loaning heaters for the winter
  • Inviting vulnerable residents over 65 to a series of 12 lunch clubs run together with Age UK

Harrow Council’s meals on wheels service will deliver the blankets and slippers while the authority’s maintenance teams will carry out home insulation work. Visits will start in the next few days after phone calls have been made to those potentially at risk.

The Winter Warmers campaign is being backed with a £50,000 fund provided by Harrow Council and Age UK is organising the lunches on behalf of the authority.

Cllr Simon Williams, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, said: “The weather is very changeable at the moment so we want to get help to those who need it before a hard spell really bites. This is all about just checking with those potentially at risk to let them know the council is ready to step in and help.”

Councils have a duty to provide civic leadership and bring communities together, and I believe this is a step in that direction.”

A decent pension would be better , not the peanuts we are getting after working all our lives to keep our Politicians in luxury , and their Ducks .

Old people are most vulnerable because they cannot AFFORD HEATING BILLS & FOOD. No point giving them electric blankets & heaters if they can’t afford to m
run them. UK Food & Energy bills need to be reduced for all and energy co & supermarket profiteering curtailed.
