Halls Got Balls: Daily Express – Tory Revolt Deepening

susan_hall_leaderSpotted today on page 14 of the Daily Express (no, I don’t take the paper – it’s all that was left in the local cafe during a late breakfast…) is another quote from our media-savvy Council Leader, Susan Hall.

Stemming from “…demands for the cancellation of plans to life visa restrictions for Romanian and Bulgarian citizens from January 1…” a major Commons debate was held today, with more than 70 Tories backing an amendment to the Government’s Immigration Bill.

The paper quotes Cllr Hall as saying, “What people are afraid of is that the freedom to travel and find work within the EU is being translated into a free pass to try and tap up the UK’s generous benefits system.”

I acknowledge that immigration brings with it problems of integration and assimilation, but I am unimpressed by the suggestions that immigrants come in order to ‘rip off the welfare system’. The fact of the matter is that people come here to work (and it might be held that this takes away jobs for British workers) and immigrants by and large pay more in taxes than they take in benefits. Let’s ignore tabloid mischief-making and have a rational debate.

Mr Bradley I completely understand your comments and I fully appreciate that the majority do come to work and we welcome those people. However we, as your Conservative Council administration, have to provide many Services and with diminishing funding we are concerned that we may easily find that resources are stretched to beyond the limits. I therefore feel it is absolutely correct to highlight our concerns. Our limited funding simply cannot cope with uncertain increased demands.

Surely we have enough home grown criminala we do not need to import them! The police do not need any addition to their already heavy work load. Hard-working,law-abiding people we do not have trouble with but those who want to come to our shores for criminal activies are not welcome. It will not be any good closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. Community cohesion will break down if these issues are not addressed by politicians.

Councillor Hall deserves her sheriff’s badge for trying to clean up the town of rubbish and criminals.
