Harrow Council Communications Contract Won by @lambeth_comms

lambeth_communicationsCongratulations to Lambeth Communications, the communications consultancy set up by Lambeth Council, for winning the next four years worth of PR spinning at Harrow Council, and commiserations to Westco, the Westminster Council comms outfit which has lost the job after seven years.

According to Lambeth Communications, “Under Julian [Ellerby]’s leadership it is now one of the most highly regarded teams in the UK, winning awards for the quality of its campaigning, digital, media and publications.”

Does that name ring a bell? Back in 2007, the “…council stood accused of cronyism following the appointment of the regional director of the London Labour Party Julian Ellerby,” according to PRWeek. At the time, John Whelan, leader of Lambeth Conservative Party, told PRWeek: “This smacks of cronyism. This is an official party spin-doctor carrying on with his work but being paid for now by the taxpayer.”

So, it another tit-for-tat move, Harrow’s Labour administration have awarded a £1.5 – £3 million contract (depending on which figures you believe) to a… wait for it… Labour-run comms outfit, headed up by an ex-director of the Labour Party.

Cronyism, Dave? Is that why it was such a big secret that you wouldn’t announce the name in the Cabinet papers this week?
