Harrow Council Leader Idaikkadar Ousted in Party Crisis

labour_roseHarrow Labour group have ousted Cllr Thaya Idaikkadar as their leader at the group’s AGM this evening.

In what was clearly a tense time, Cllr Idaikkadar (Labour, Roxeth) was challenged by Cllr David Perry (Labour, Marlborough) for the leadership position. Cllr Idaikkadar, the first ever Sri-Lankan council leader, held the position for just under six months, a difficult period where he saw two of his Labour colleagues having their collars felt by the police, brought in a 2% council tax rise, and had a by-election to contend with.

We also understand that Cllr Nana Asante, currently Deputy Mayor, was also to be challenged for the position of Mayor for 2013/14, although we don’t know the outcome of that yet. There’s also no word yet on the group’s deputy leader, a position currently held by Margaret Davine (Labour, Edgware).

Cllr Idaikkadar’s future within the group is unknown; it is expected that Leader Perry will be announcing his new cabinet in due course.

Harrow’s Labour Group have been asked for a comment, and we’re awaiting their reply.

Thaya Idaikkader is a very nice man. However, he should never have been The Leader of Harrow Council. I hope David Perry is up to the task but I have a feeling that we will see no real change. Steering a lame ship home after the storms has ravaged it seems very unlikely. I keenly await Will Stoodley’s comment on this change in leadership.
