Harrow Council (Quietly) Announces 13.6% Price Increase on Building Control Charges

harrow_council_broken_2Labour-run Harrow Council is quietly intending to increase the amount it charges for building control inspections by 13.6% in January 2017, following a decrease in demand for the service as a result of increased competition from the private sector.

This means a resident planning to build a small, less than 10m2 extension to their home, will now be charged over £550 just for  full plans application and inspections.

The council says: “Local authorities are in direct competition with the private sector in the form of ‘Approved Inspectors’, who can also carry out the building control function. Increasing numbers of Approved Inspectors has resulted in a loss of the local market share.”
