Following a successful year as Mayor, Nizam has been appointed Portfolio Holder for  Community and Culture and also Housing, he said : “I shall perform to the best of my  ability and serve the people of Harrow with the help of the knowledge and experience that I have gained during my past 11 years of service as a Councillor.”

Born in Sri Lanka, Nizam has been living in Harrow for over 40 years. A retired Engineer, he worked with British Telecom and served with Ministry of Defence (RAFStanmore Park & RAF Uxbridge). He received a commendation from Air Vice-Marshal AJC Bagnall (CB OBE RAF) for the services rendered to RAF HQ, 11 Group.

A family orientated person, Nizam lives with his wife. They have a son and daughter and two grandchildren. His son and daughter both studied in Harrow schools. Daughter is a Consultant dermatologist and son is a Vice President of a Merchant Bank in the city. Nizam was first elected to represent the Queensbury Ward in 2002 and was subsequently re-elected in May 2006 and May 2010. He has served in various Council Committees and Panels: Planning, Grants, Education, Governance and Audit, Licensing and the Standards Committee which deals with Code of Conduct issues.

He also chaired the Traffic and Road Safety Advisory Panel with great success, building and developing cross party consensus on complicated issues.

He also served as a Governor of a school for over 14 years. An active campaigner for the multi-faith dialogue, he is a founder Member and first Chairman of the Harrow Muslim Council (HMC) as well as the Chairman of Overseas Sri Lankan Muslim Educational Trust (OSMET), a registered charity. He has held the position of Group Chief Whip and Treasurer of Harrow Labour Group. Elected as Deputy Mayor in 2011/12, he was elected as Mayor in 2012/13.

During his term of office as Mayor there were 642 engagements. Nizam visited every place of worship – Mosques, Churches, Synagogues and Mandiris and was well received by all communities. The majority of the events were local events, meeting voluntary sector, children from schools, Scouts, cadets, guides, care homes and many more. He has handed well over 2500 citizenship certificates to Harrow residents and really enjoyed talking to people of various nationalities when they attend the citizenship Ceremony. One of the main features of the Mayoral year was the Olympics and Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee where he met people from all walks of life. London New Years day Parade where a large number of Harrow’s Voluntary organisations and community groups participated in the best ever Harrow Float was a great success, all raising the profile of the Borough beamed via satellite all over the world. Harrow won a trophy and a cheque for £2000 for the Mayor’s Charity.

Nizam raised £20,000 for his nominated charity “Age UK Harrow” during the year.
