Harrow Labour Candidate Says: Shocked at Energy Price Rises

labour_roseI am shocked at the latest British Gas announcement that they will raise gas and electricity prices by 9.2%. Being able to heat your home is a basic necessity. This latest price hike will make heating our homes so expensive many of our hard pressed residents will have to make savings on other necessities like food and clothes.

British Gas made £356m of profits on its residential services in the first six months of 2013 alone, this is an increase of 11% on the previous year. This profit is made at our expense, and goes into the hands of the shareholders.

I have been out canvassing for the Harrow-on-the-Hill by-election, and I am becoming increasingly worried by what I am hearing from our residents. The squeeze from the cost of living crisis is becoming a real problem, with some of our most vulnerable residents having to make the choice between an evening meal or heating their home.

I recently had a conversation with a volunteer worker who highlighted to me the fact that the Harrow food banks are under huge pressure and that the legal assistance charities are overwhelmed with our residents debt problems.

The Labour Party has said that we will freeze energy prices when in power. This is just what needs doing to make sure energy companies can’t continue raising prices, just to make bigger profits.

When I have been out and about during this by-election campaign it is this sort of practical help that our residents say will help. I hope that we can continue to offer solutions that can help our residents through this latest addition to household bills.

  1. Pragmatist

It’s a shame the Labour Group weren’t so sympathetic when they put the council tax up then wasn’t it – how do you think that helped?

..and how exactly are the Labour Party going to freeze the prices of all the energy companies? buy all the shares and own them ??? In a free capitalist market place you can’t just go around freezing the prices of what you chose – it doesn’t work like that.

Why don’t you concentrate on the things you can actually do something about rather than hollow promises to grab a few votes.

  2. Cllr Willy Stoodley

I was about to say exactly the same thing! Why don’t you stick to local issues Glen, instead ofof plastering your campaign leaflet with popularist national issues that the local authority can do nothing about? Or are you campaigning on behalf of Gareth Thomas instead of on behalf of yourself? And why don’t you dispel that lie about you living in Harrow “all your life”, or was your mother wrong when she told Cllr Steve Wright and I that you were in the far east for several years? No local issues and a blatent lie – not a very good start Glen.

  3. Praxis Reform

Whilst the sentiments are right, the idea of trying to coat tail Ed Millipedes crazy theory that market forces can be halted is laughable electioneering… Put simply, with the slightest whiff of a Labour victory, Gas and Electric prices will just increase yet again, before he takes office.

Perhaps we could all submit ideas for things we’d like to see Mr Hearnden freeze the prices of once elected, petrol could be a vote winner.

In fact, it might even beat Mr Zeid’s promise of being able to lose 2″ off my waist and get 25% of a Rolex watch
