Harrow’s Libraries to celebrate National Bookstart Week

books-150x150Harrow’s libraries will celebrate National Bookstart Week with special fairy tale themed story times for under fives in branches across the borough.

Bookstart is the national free books programme that encourages all parents and carers to enjoy books with children from as early an age as possible.

Story times will take place at Bob Lawrence, Gayton, North Harrow, Pinner, Rayners Lane, Roxeth and Wealdstone libraries.

There will also be special Bookstart gifting events where parents and carers will be able to collect Bookstart book packs for babies and toddlers and meet Leo the library lion who will be making a guest appearance.

Staff from Harrow Libraries and from the Harrow Families Information Service will be on hand to give advice and answer questions. Gifting events will be held at the following locations:

  • St. George’s Centre Monday 24th June from 9.30am – 2pm
  • Morrisons (Harrow) on Thursday 27th June from 9.30am-1pm
  • The Wealdstone Centre on Friday 28th June from 9am – 12pm

Thousands of families from across the UK will be invited to take part in fairy tale themed activities in libraries, children’s centres, bookshops, and a range of venues, to highlight the fun of reading with children. This year, a free specially commissioned Ugly Duckling booklet, illustrated by Masumi Furukawa will be gifted to families at events to encourage mums, dads and carers to read with their children every day. National Bookstart Week helps remind families that reading books with their child is one of the most enjoyable activities they can share.

Harrow Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community and Culture, Cllr Nizam Ismail, said: “The events for National Bookstart week will give our residents the perfect opportunity to discover the wonderful world of reading. Now is a great time to get into your local library and see all the great things it has to offer!”
