Have your say on Heart of Harrow regeneration

It is time for residents and businesses to be a part of exciting efforts to regenerate Harrow Town Centre and Wealdstone, as the Council launches a new consultation.

“This is an early opportunity for you to shape the future of the heart of our borough…” — Cllr Keith Ferry, portfolio holder for planning and economic development

Working with planning experts and the community, the Council has drawn up four options for revitalising the heart of the borough. They aim to transform its commercial and entertainment centre, attracting new business to create 3,000 extra jobs and build 2,500 new homes over the next 15 years.

From 13th May to 24th June, the Council will be asking residents and businesses for their views, and also inviting prospective developers to have their say. Thirteen public events will be staged around the borough inviting people to come and find out more as well as give their views.

These views will be used to create an action plan for Harrow Town Centre, Wealdstone and Station Road , that will guide all future development and stimulate regeneration. It will also ensure that the size, density and design of new buildings enhance the unique character of these areas.

The four development options are:

  1. One Centre: proposes that Harrow town centre and Wealdstone are treated as a single area, so the type and character of development could be the same throughout. There would be high density development.
  2. Harrow Plus: This option focuses development around Harrow Town Centre, with extra retail, office and cultural facilities, to become more ‘city’ like. Wealdstone would be benefit from smaller scale, mainly residential growth although its industrial base is maintained.
  3. Two Centres: The existing characters of Harrow and Wealdstone are enhanced by development that is sensitive and responsive to their individual characters.
  4. High Road and Centre: Station Road is dramatically improved creating a vibrant link between the two centres. The different characters of Harrow and Wealdstone are maintained through sensitive development.

Cllr Keith Ferry, portfolio holder for planning and economic development on Harrow Council, said:

“This is an early opportunity for you to shape the future of the heart of our borough and we particularly want to hear from people who live, work or go to school in the area.

“The Heart of Harrow is the borough’s economic, retail and leisure centre so all Harrow residents will benefit from its rejuvenation. We want to work with the entire community to create a long-term vision for the area to help it become an attractive shopping and commercial destination in north London .

“The masterplan we are creating will set out our ambition for how the area is developed over the next 15 years and be a tool for attracting new investment, improving the shopping and entertainment offer and creating new homes, jobs and social facilities.

“At the same time the masterplan will seek to protect the unique characters of Harrow town centre, Wealdstone and Station Road , demanding high quality, sustainable design and appropriate improvements to public and green space.

“Make sure you take this opportunity to make your views known.”

Using the views of the community, businesses and developers, the Council will select one of the four options to take forward. Throughout the summer and autumn there will be further opportunity for residents and business to give their views on they type and location of future development.
