Irony: Two Labour Councillors Convicted of Crimes; Labour Leader in Sponsored Jail Event

idaikkadar_behind_barsYou couldn’t make it up.

It seems like only yesterday that two of Labour’s councillors were having their collars felt by the law. With Cllr David Gawn convicted of fraud/dishonesty offences first, followed by ex-Cllr Brian Gate then taking a caution for child porn offences, we now find that the Leader of the Labour Group decides to spend a few hours behind bars for charity.

Either he’s missed the irony of if all – two of his fellow councillors getting nicked – or he’s blind to the crass insensitivity of it all. Let’s not forget that there were victims involved here: Gawn’s victim lost several thousand pounds to him, and Gate’s… well, if there were no consumers of child porn, there wouldn’t be a market for it. Enough said.

St Luke’s Hospice, as we’ve said before, is a great charity, and gains 70% of it’s funding through the generous support of the community – and they hope that the Jail and Bail event that Insensitive Leader is taking part in will raise £15,000: enough to fund 250 home visits from their hospice at home team.

St Luke’s have provided us with this statement:

St Luke’s is apolitical and is grateful for support from all areas of the community, regardless of political affiliation.

Individuals from several different parties are taking part in the Jail and Bail including the leader and deputy leader of Brent Conservatives, as well as the leader of Harrow Council.

St Luke’s is dependent upon the generous support of the community for over 70% of the funding we need to provide end of life care. We hope that the Jail and Bail will raise £15000, enough to fund 250 home visits from our hospice at home team, allowing end of life patients to receive the best possible palliative care in the familiar surroundings of their own home.

We are tremendously grateful to all of our Jail and Bail participants and wish them the best of luck with their fundraising – their efforts will make a tremendous difference to patients coping with illnesses which cannot be cured, and to their families.

We’d urge people to donate directly to St Luke’s Hospice here, or support one of the other participants in the Jail and Bail event once they announce their involvement. But to support Insensitive Leader’s participation mocks the victims that his convicted colleagues have left in their wakes.

Paul – why do you criticise Thaya doing this, then say it’s great that he’s doing it?! MAKE YOUR MIND UP!

  2. I don’t think it’s great that he’s doing it. I do, however, think that St Luke’s do a great job.

I’m all for raising money for charity – and St Luke’s do a great job in the community. Were your Leader doing something else – anything other than a stint behind bars – I’d even be tempted to donate to the cause myself, but the irony of him being banged up, when two other Labour councillors have recently been convicted of crime, doesn’t seem right. I think it’s great he’s raising money; I think it’s appalling and insensitive that he’s doing it this way, at this time.
