Job fair attracts hundreds of jobseekers

harrow_council_logoAlmost 300 people attended the Xcite Employment and Training Fair today (Thursday, 23 January). Residents looking for work or wanting to brush up and learn new skills mingled with a wide range of prospective employers and training providers helping get them into work and training.

Exhibitors attending came from various industries, including, NatWest Bank, Direct Care Telecom, health care, cosmetics, retail, and training providers such as Harrow and Stanmore Colleges, and Learndirect.

Cabinet Member for Business and Enterprise, Cllr Kamaljit Chana said: “I am pleased that so many attended the job fair today. It shows how many residents are out there looking for work and training opportunities. Supporting residents is a top priority for the council and the Xcite job fair gives a helping hand for anyone looking for expert help and advice with direct contact with employers and training providers. We will continue to help residents through our many employment and training initiatives.”

The job fair puts Harrow residents in direct contact with employers, recruitment companies and training providers who are there to advice people on how to gain and improve skills as well as interview skills and CV writing.

Vanisha Mistry, 23, from Stanmore said: “It was really useful and the information provided was really good. I liked the fact that it was local rather than central. I came to find out about any graduate trainee programmes, however, I found out about other courses and training available.”

Sumana Basu, 32, from Harrow said: “I am glad this was arranged as I am looking for training in education. There were colleges that provided me with the information I needed which was very helpful and I’ve seen a few courses I’d like to take up. I also signed up for some volunteer work.”

  1. Cllr. Manji Kara

When I was in the Civic Centre this morning, I took the opportunity to visit the Job Fair and speak to the businesses, organisers and job seekers. I was not only pleased to see so many job seekers but also so many jobs advertised. The number and variety of the businesses participating was also encouraging. I am confident that such fairs will help further lower the unemployment which is already one of the lowest in London. Well done Xcite Team.

I agree with Manji I am also proud of the fact that for the first time in Harrows history we have a specific business cabinet member. Kam Channer is working so hard to make contact with Harrows businesses. As a small business owner myself I am more than aware how hard things have been for the past few years and as a responsible council administration we must search for ways we can help

Almost 300 people attended the job fair! How many people are actually claiming benefit in Harrow? I would hazard a guess that the figure is more than 300!
