Join ‘Family Fun Walk’ to raise awareness of diabetes – September 8, 2013

harrow_council_logo2Harrow residents are invited to take part in a family fun walk on Sunday 8th September to raise money for a local diabetes charity.

People can join Harrow Council’s Chief Executive Michael Lockwood and other celebrities in the hour long walk which will take place at 3pm in Canons Park via Howberry Road. The entrance fee is only £1 and all proceeds go to the charity. The winners of each category will receive their certificate from Bollywood Legend and International Patron of Silver Star, Amitabh Bachchan at a special ceremony.

Diabetes awareness charity Silver Star is organising the event. They have recently opened a new office in Harrow and held free diabetes checks at the civic centre in June.

Harrow has one of the highest diabetes rates in London. It is estimated that in 2012, 9.2% of people aged 16 and over had (diagnosed and undiagnosed) diabetes in the borough. This figure is expected to rise to 10.8% by 2020.

Mike Lockwood said: “Diabetes is effecting more and more people so it is vital that we raise awareness through community events like the Family Fun Walk. Some of our residents will not know they have diabetes, others will be able to reduce their chances of getting it by making changes to their eating habits. The walk will be a fantastic chance to get together, have some fun and hopefully enjoy the sunshine. You can help make a real difference by signing up.”

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by too much glucose in the blood. Over 3 million people are diagnosed with diabetes in the UK. More than one million people are unaware they have the illness.
