New Mayor of Harrow Announced

The new Mayor for Harrow was announced last night, as Cllr Nizam Ismail.

The Mayor was elected at Harrow Council’s AGM, and formally appointed at the mayor making ceremony on Tuesday evening.

Cllr Ismail has been a Labour councillor since 2002 in Queensbury, and is also a governor at three local school. The new Mayor, and his wife Zarafaran – the new Mayoress – have declared AGE UK Harrow as their chosen charity for the year.

The Mayor is the first citizen of the borough and always has precedence in the borough unless royalty or the Lord Lieutenant is present. The Deputy Mayor is Cllr Nana Asante and Deputy Mayoress is Ms Awula Serwah.

The Mayor chairs the council meetings and carries out some 500 – 600 engagements during the year, ranging from major civic functions to small personal celebrations, such as 100th birthdays.

The Mayor is always happy to welcome groups to the Civic Centre, by appointment, where a guided tour can be given together with a talk on the history of the borough and the civic insignia.
