North Harrow Market to Become Permanent

A popular street market established by Harrow Council to revive retail fortunes in North Harrow has proved such a success it is to become a permanent monthly event.

Harrow Council used Mayor of London Outer London Funding to begin holding the occasional three day market earlier this year in Pinner Road and Station Road to increase customer footfall in the area.

The North Harrow market, which has succeeded in attracting more than 4,000 visitors, is part of the council’s strategy to strengthen the borough’s economy and follows retail guru Mary Portas’ recommendation that street markets be used to encourage shoppers to shop locally.

Leasing a market stall has been shown to allow traders a low cost opportunity to get their business off the ground and to try out new ideas and bring new products and possibilities to the high street, as well as preserving its traditional atmosphere.

Harrow has also got rid of a lot of the red tape that prevents the take up of retail outlets and has succeeded in reversing the trend for empty retail units in North Harrow.

Cllr Keith Ferry, portfolio holder for planning and regeneration at Harrow Council, said: “The street market is about bringing the bustle back to North Harrow and I am delighted that it will now be a regular destination for local residents.”

The North Harrow Street Market will next be held over the three days 4th October to 7th October .
