Paralympic Games 2012: Special Events in Harrow

The first of two “One Year to Go: Paralympics” events will be hosted at Aspire Training Centre and the target group for this event will be primary school children. It will be an inclusive event and while the focus will be on children with learning and physical disabilities at main stream schools, schools will be encouraged to bring non-Special Educational Needs (SEN) children to take part alongside their SEN peers.

Four children from every junior school in Harrow will be invited to take part in taster sessions for Paralympic sports including Boccia, wheelchair basketball, seated volleyball and curling.

The first event will take place at:

Aspire National Training Centre, Wood Lane, Stanmore, HA7 4AP on Thursday 8 September 2011, 10am-1pm.

Aspire aims to provide sustainability by using this event to maintain links with schools, which will evolve into lunchtime sports clubs.

The second event will take place in:

Harrow Town Centre on Saturday 17 September 2011 from 11am-3pm.

This will be a high visibility marquee and games area in front of the St George’s Shopping Centre in Harrow Town Centre, and will aim to encourage passers by and shoppers to take part in or stop and watch Paralympic sports.

The schools’ Disability Pentathlon team will run events, which the public can have a go at, challenge their friends to or just stand and watch.

Local shops and businesses will be contacted and invited to enter teams for a series of mini competitions in seated volleyball and other Paralympic sports. It is hoped they will also contribute prizes.

The marquee will be staffed by volunteers, Aspire staff and council officers, who will supply the public with publicity about local events and sports and will also sell badges.
