Roxeth Rec Gains Gold Award

From Harrow Council…  Roxeth Rec was one of only 31 parks across London to win a Gold in the Safer Park Awards, presented by Boris Johnson.  The full press release is as follows…

“Safe, well-kept parks are the green lungs of our communities. The Council works in close partnership with residents, the police and others to make them welcoming places for people of all ages.” – Cllr Phillip O’Dell

Three Harrow parks earned prestigious new awards from the Mayor of London last week for joint action between the Council, Police and users groups to stamp out crime and anti-social behaviour.

Boris Johnson handed down gold Safer Park Awards to Harrow Recreation Ground, Roxeth Recreation Ground and Canons Park . Only 31 parks across the capital secured an award and just 12 earned the top gold standard – including all three of Harrow’s entries.

The awards are presented to Friends of Parks groups who have worked in partnership with their councils and police to target anti-social behaviour and revitalise green spaces.

This collaboration has transformed Canons Park in recent years. Previously used by dog walkers and commuters only, it gained an unsafe reputation and residents were reluctant to use it.

A Steering Group was set up to coordinate activities and change this public perception, including Friends of Canons Park, the police, Council, the local residents association, and a church and school. The park is now is busy from dawn until dusk with a thriving café, on-site police base and new children’s playground.

Cllr Phillip O’Dell, portfolio holder for environment and community safety on Harrow Council, said:

“Safe, well-kept parks are the green lungs of our communities. The Council works in close partnership with residents, the police and others to make them welcoming places for people of all ages.

“These awards are a credit to everyone from the Council’s grounds maintenance staff and police safer neighbourhoods teams, to the residents who volunteer their time and take great pride in improving our green spaces.

“All three of the Safer Park Award winners also have Green Flag status and are therefore some of the best parks you will find anywhere in London.”

Robin Morden, former chairman of the Friends of Canons Park, said:

“The Friends are very pleased with Harrow Council’s parks-friendly approach which has helped us achieve this award.

“We work very closely with both the Council and the police and it is a pleasure to do so.

“They listen to us about the things we want to get done in Canons Park and are very supportive of the projects we want to pursue. In turn, we are only too happy to offer our assistance to both the Council and the police to ensure our park is a safe, attractive place for residents to enjoy.”
