This year the London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hounslow and Richmond, all of them Fairtrade Boroughs, have joined forces to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, which began on 23 February. They are holding Fairtrade walks that converge on a Celebration in Chiswick of 20 years of Fairtrade on Saturday 7 March.

The walks: Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hounslow and Richmond Fairtrade Groups have each planned a walking route through their Borough, highlighting shops, cafés, places of worship, schools and workplaces that are selling, serving and using Fairtrade products.

The walks in Brent, Ealing, Hounslow and Richmond will take place on Saturday 7 March. The Harrow leg of the Fairtrade Walk takes place on Saturday 28th February from 2:00PM – 4:00PM starting from Harrow Baptist Church.

As well as spotlighting shops and organisations that support Fairtrade, the routes will also pass by local places of interest such as Kew Gardens and Ealing Studios. There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy Fairtrade  refreshments en route and the walk will conclude with a Celebration open to walkers and anyone else.

The Celebration of 20 years of Fairtrade is a joint event of the five Boroughs on Saturday 7 March in Chiswick at the Parish Hall of St Michael & All Angels (www.smaaa.org.uk) on Bath Road near Turnham Green station.

There will be stalls and Fairtrade tea and coffee (generously supplied by Cafédirect) to greet the walkers and others: entry is free and open to all from 4 pm. The formal start of the event will be at 4.30 pm with welcome and opening by Mary Macleod MP followed by talks and films:

  • Jonathan Smith, Head of Campaigns at the Fairtrade Foundation
  • Clare Paine of Christian Aid on the early days of Fairtrade
  • Charlotte Borger, Communications Director of Divine Chocolate

Closing comments at 6 pm will be followed by tasting of Fairtrade chocolate generously supplied by Divine Chocolate and Fairtrade wine generously supplied by the Co-op.
