An range of free sporting sessions and cultural events will be on offer to residents on 23 to 24 July, as part of London 2012 Open Weekend – a celebration marking one year to go to the Olympics

Harrow Council and Greenwich Leisure Limited will be hosting the events at the Arts Centre, Hatch End Pool, Bannister Sports Centre and Harrow Leisure Centre as part of the nationwide countdown.

“With the London Games just a year away, the Open Weekend is a fantastic way to launch countdown.” – Cllr David Perry

Residents can take part in swimming sessions at Hatch End Pool, or try a range of Olympic sports at Bannister Sports Centre including Shot Put, Javelin, Pole Vault and the High Jump.

Swimming will also be available at the Harrow Leisure Centre, in addition to squash coaching and trampoline sessions. Visitors can also try out its fitness centre, whilst younger guests can explore the ‘adventure world’ play area.

Puppet making, photography, ballroom dancing, Bollywood classes and Tae Kwon Do will be among the activities taking place at the Harrow Arts Centre.

Councillor David Perry, portfolio holder for community and cultural services at the council, said:

“There is a brilliant programme on offer all weekend and it is a great way for the whole family to get out and about and see the best of what our arts and leisure facilities have to offer. It’s also a chance to try something different, or perhaps start getting back into shape, and it won’t cost you a penny.”

The open day is also an opportunity for residents to see how Harrow ‘s leisure facilities have improved, three months after Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) took over the running of the facilities.

Mark Sesnan, Managing Director of GLL said: “We’re delighted to be working in Harrow and this community weekend will ensure that we enable the residents to celebrate one year to the Olympics.”
