Summer Holiday Narrowboating Courses for 11-18 year olds

Summer holiday narrowboat courses for young people in Hillingdon

Hillingdon Narrowboats Association is running courses for young people in the school holidays, teaching them how to work a boat and introducing important teamwork skills. These one-day courses will educate 11-18 year olds in how to steer, turn and handle a narrowboat. Parents looking for something different for their children to do in August, or teenagers on the lookout for a new challenge, may be surprised to find that for just £25 per day, they can learn a wide variety of new skills and meet some new friends, whilst having fun at the same time. Everyone will learn safe procedures for working a boat along the canal, including turning it round; they’ll learn how to operate a lock and participate in lots of teamwork. Each group will be presented with various challenges for which they’ll need to work together to solve the problem.

The courses are running daily from 10:00 – 17:00, from Monday 20th August to Friday 24th August. Lunch is included in the price of the day’s activity and participants will receive a certificate at the end of the day. There are just twelve places available per day, but no limit to how many days each participant can attend. David Wright, Project Manager for Hillingdon Narrowboats Association, is looking forward to the sessions and said, “Bringing boating to young people is exactly the type of project for which our dedicated volunteers love to give their time.”

About Hillingdon Narrowboats Association

Hillingdon Narrowboats Association has been providing affordable boating to the community since 1991 and has a long history of working with youth organisations such as the Scouts and Guides, bringing these skills to a younger audience. The opportunity to steer one of these 70ft-long narrowboats in a safe, modern environment is something that everyone should be able to experience. The association runs and maintains five boats at its boathouse in Summerhouse Lane, Harefield. Two of the boats are owned and insured by Hillingdon Council, whilst the other three are maintained on behalf of local organisations such as the Hillingdon Partnership Trust. A wheelchair-accessible boat ensures that all sections of the community have access to the waterway. All of the skippers at Hillingdon Narrowboats Association have clearance to work with young people and are qualified with the nationally-recognised Certificate in Community Boat Management. For safety, lifejackets are worn by participants and crew at all times.
