Visit My Mosque – February 1, 2015

On Sunday 1 February, the Muslim community of the Shia Ithna’ashari Community of Middlesex (SICM) in North Harrow has organised an open day from 2 to 4pm alongside mosques across the country in line with the Muslim Council of Britain’s national “Visit my mosque” day (see http://www.mcb.org.uk/visitmymosque/ for further details).

Leaflets will be distributed across North Harrow to invite local residents to come in and find out what SICM does, as well as ask questions about Islam or about the ongoing building works for the multi-purpose Salaam Centre.

The purpose of the event is to reach out and promote community cohesion, encourage deeper cultural and religious understanding and above all, to provide the opportunity to for more people to get to know one another over tea and biscuits!

20150130_mosque_visitExecutive Committee member Miqdaad Versi noted: “This open day is part of a series of outreach work done by our organisation in the past few months. This has included a range of interfaith and social action programmes with the local community. The next such session is an interfaith dessert bake-off on February 7th at 2-4pm, co-organised by North Harrow Methodist Church, St. Alban’s Church and our community.”

The Shia Ithna’ashari Community of Middlesex (SICM) is a local Muslim organisation based at Mahfil Ali in Harrow, which is heavily involved in the local community. Further to its deep and long-standing inter- and intrafaith work, it is a founder of a local food bank, Sufra, leads health awareness sessions, provides volunteers to help the homeless and supports the development of sustainable mental health resources in communities with MIND in Harrow. It is currently in the process of building a multi-purpose community centre (the Salaam Centre), which encapsulates its vision of building a more open, accepting and engaged community.
