The ‘New Neighbour’ Scam – Harrow Police Warning

Harrow Police are warning residents of a scam that has come to their notice in the last few weeks.

A man, knocked on the door of a house in Wealdstone and introduced himself as a new neighbour. He told the occupier of the house that there is a severe drainage problem and after consulting with a drainage company has discovered that the problem is coming from neighbour’s side of the garden. He tried to get the neighbour to part with £3,000 in cash which he said was the deposit for the hire of two pieces of equipment which the drainage company apparently needed to rectify the problem.

“…be aware of ‘cold callers’ especially those offering to carry out work on properties.”

A short while later the occupier of the house received a call from someone claiming to be from the drainage company warning that if he didn’t pay up the money, he would be liable for any major problems that might arise.

Thankfully in this case the victim didn’t part with any money and contacted police immediately.

Borough Commander Dal Babu said:

“This is one of many scams that we have heard of recently. We would urge residents to be aware of ‘cold callers’ especially those offering to carry out work on properties or suggesting there are serious repairs that need urgent attention. Never part with any cash and if in doubt get a second opinion from a reputable company.”

Police are looking for a white man, with an Irish accent, 6′ 2″ tall, of slim build with brown wavey hair. He was wearing dark clothing.
