Gareth Says: 7% increase in cancelled operations

A Parliamentary Question tabled by Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas has revealed that North West London Hospitals NHS Trust, which manages Central Middlesex Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital and St Mark’s Hospital, has seen a 7% increase in the number of cancelled operations for non-clinical reasons since 2010-11.

Cancelled operations can be distressing for both patients and their families and such an increase is a sign of the pressure the NHS is under as the Government’s controversial changes begin to bite at a cost of £2billion, of which the cost to Harrow’s health service has already been estimated at a minimum of £13million.

Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow West said: “This significant rise in the number of cancelled operations is a worrying sign. After the weekday closure of the Alexandra Avenue Polyclinic many in Harrow will understandably want reassurance that the number of cancelled operations won’t continue to rise as health service cuts begin to bite.”
