Gareth Says: Raising Awareness of Carers Rights Day

gareth_thomas_headshotLocal MP Gareth Thomas has used national Carers Rights Day to urge carers in Harrow to find out about the support they are entitled to.

There are 6.5 million people in the UK providing unpaid care and support to family, friends and neighbours. In Harrow, it is estimated that there are 1,158 carers who are eligible but not currently claiming any carers allowance. Carers UK have reported that nationally, 360,000 full-time carers miss out on the main carers’ benefit.

Gareth Thomas MP for Harrow West said: “Carers make a huge contribution here in Harrow caring for ill, frail or disabled loved ones. It’s vital that we are able to identify and signpost carers to the advice and support that is available locally. If you know anyone who is a carer and you think they may be entitled to support, then you can order a free booklet with more information by visiting www.carersuk.org or by calling the Carers UK Adviceline on 0808 808 7777.”
