Harrow West MP, Gareth Thomas, on Harrow’s Council Tax Rise

gareth_thomas_headshot1We asked Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow West, what he thought about Harrow Council’s recent announcement of  a 2% rise in Council Tax in the borough. He had this to say about it:

I recognise that this is an extremely difficult decision for the council to make. Harrow Council is caught between a rock and a hard place; facing huge cuts in government funding whilst at the same time wanting to protect vital services like funding for schools, road repairs and care for the elderly.

Labour councillors understand that many Harrow residents are struggling under the government’s failed economic policies, and  have made considerable savings by making the Council more efficient; reducing the number and pay of senior officers. However, very hard decisions are still having to be made.

An extremely incompetent & unaccountable council is wasting a lot of money and is far too close to certain property developers. If the £3.6m grant was accepted there is no need for council tax to rise.
