Guest Post: Avanti House at Whitchurch Fields: Encouraging News

cllr_manji_karaDear Editor,

I personally welcome the announcement that an Avanti House Hindu secondary school could be built on the Whitchurch Playing Fields site. This is incredibly encouraging news, not only for the Hindu community, but also for the larger community of Harrow.

As a Harrow councillor – and indeed a ward councillor for Belmont – I am acutely aware of both the need for more school places in our borough, and the unease at the uncertainty surrounding the Whitchurch Playing Fields site. By the end of the decade, Harrow will need nearly 700 extra school places for 11-year-olds – meaning around four more secondary schools than we have at the moment. Therefore, a solution that would deliver both a much-needed school and a clear future for the site would be most welcome.

As a father of two children who went to state schools in Harrow, I understand the value of good local education being available to all. The existing Krishna Avanti primary school (which opened under the previous Conservative administration in 2008) is a good school – rated as such by OFSTED – and I am certain that such standards would continue if the secondary school goes ahead.

As a Hindu, I also welcome the possibility of more choice in education; choice reflecting the diverse composition of our borough and helping enrich the cultural variety of our children’s schooling. As our community develops and becomes ever more diverse, this can only be a positive step forward.

I take this opportunity to wish Avanti House success with this project, and await the outcome of the feasibility study with interest.

This is a wonderful idea especially if we need new schools or expansion of schools to accommodate students in the near future. I’m all for Green and having more parkland and playing fields for people, but having more schools for the future of Harrow is a good idea.

The Krishna Avanti Schools are of a high standard.Harrow is very fortunate they will be taking this site to provide excellent education for some of Harrow’s children who will no doubt shine under their care.
