Become an Outdoor Gym Activator

outdoor_gymFancy trying something new in 2013? We are looking for a team of volunteers to help support the local community to get active and use Harrow Council’s free outdoor green gyms.

As an Outdoor Gym Activator, you will be helping the community use the outdoor gyms, encouraging safe exercise in a way that will achieve physical, social and mental benefits and encourage communities to become more active by making use of Harrows outdoor spaces, particularly the outdoor gyms, free of charge.

You will also gain a nationally recognised fitness instructor qualification, opening up work opportunities within the fitness industry, and giving you the skills needed to develop your self-confidence and communication.

The scheme is open for those who are unemployed and on state benefit, unemployed and receiving Job Seeker’s Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance, or if this is your first full level 2 qualification (A*-C grade GCSE or equivalent) and you are aged 19 – 23.

This innovative scheme is being run in a partnership between NHS Harrow, Harrow Council and Stanmore College, sponsored through CSPAN and funded by Harrow Council. The project is one of several in Harrow to deliver a lasting Olympics legacy for residents.

Outdoor gyms are a new way to look at health and fitness. They include much of the same equipment found in an indoor gym, but the difference is they are specifically designed for outdoor use. Outdoor gyms are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, and you don’t need any experience to use them. Best of all, there are no membership fees to pay.

There are six outdoor gyms across Harrow: Alexandra Avenue Park, Kenton Recreation Ground, Chandos Park, Harrow Recreation Ground, Byron Park and Saddlers Mead (Hatch End). If you’re not familiar with outdoor gyms, pop along to one to have a look!

Harrow Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community and Cultural Services, Councillor David Perry, said: “This is a fantastic scheme, which really shows our Olympic legacy in action, and we’re proud to be able to fund this project in partnership with Harrow’s Community Sports and Physical Activity network. Activators will have the opportunity to get involved, help out in their community, and gain a qualification which can help them with their futures, while residents can get free advice and guidance to help them lead healthy, active lifestyles from a trained professional.”
