Aspire – free gym sessions for disabled young people

Instructability is offering FREE gym sessions for disabled people aged 16-25 living in Brent, Harrow or Hillingdon. To take advantage of this offer please email them .

Aspire recently carried out research, looking at disability and the fitness industry, which showed that there was a definite need for better training around inclusive fitness. It was clear that disabled people often feel more confident when there are disabled fitness instructors in their gym and that disabled people wishing to become fitness instructors faced obstacles and discrimination when applying for roles in the fitness industry.

As a pioneer in the field of inclusive fitness, this led the charity to approach YMCAfit and IFI (Inclusive Fitness Initiative) with a proposal to train disabled people as fitness instructors.  A pilot programme was set up to run between October and December 2010 with training provided by YMCAfit.

Seven of the nine applicants have gone on to become fully qualified Fitness Instructors and four have been offered work at local leisure centres.

Fiona, who is spinally injured and a former midwife, completed her placement at the Aspire National Training Centre and said,“ The course and placement has given me back the confidence I had lost. I am really enjoying giving fitness advice to the gym users and wish I could work here all the time!”

Instructability has been granted the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme.

The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The next Instructability course will start in the New Year – if you are interested in applying email instructability@aspire.org.uk.
