Mayor of Harrow Opens Welldon Park Junior School Library

welldon_park_logoOn Friday 29th November, The Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Nana Asante, visited Welldon Park Junior School to officially unveil our new school library. She was joined by Cllr John Nickolay, our Chair of Governors, members of staff, pupils and parents to cut the ribbon and declare our wonderful new school resource open.

One of our school improvement priorities this year is to focus on reading across the school. Being a successful reader is vital in supporting all our children to reach their potential, not just in their English work but across all aspects of our curriculum. Reading is a life skill that opens doorways, creates new opportunities, and supports future education and future careers! We believe that all children can be successful readers with the right resources, support and encouragement. One if our aims this year is to widen the reading choices that pupils make so they are not always reading the same type of book by the same authors. We want to open the children’s eyes to a world of books and stories that will transport them to places they have never visited before and help them discover things they never knew. At Welldon Park, we want to help the children develop a love of books and a love of reading for life!

wpjs_library_1Part of our work to promote reading in the school was to create a brand new library. We have spent a significant amount of money on redecorating and refitting the room to create a library with a vibrant, fun, welcoming feel. Thanks to FOWPSA we had money to spend on soft seating for children to relax on and lose themselves in a good book. Thanks to the children’s fundraising at last summer’s international festival we purchased four iPads so pupils and parents can read online, check out the latest news on the school website and research the topics they are covering in class lessons.

When the countdown was complete and the ribbon cut, our children took the Mayor on a guided tour of the library. Julia showed the Mayor our dual language books and impressed her by reading in English and Polish. Aminah showed the Mayor the fiction books and shared an extract from one of her favourite novels and Aaron showed off our brand new iPads.
