Gareth Thomas on Blackberry, Phone and Laptop Hunt

gareth_thomas_headshotLabour MP for Harrow West, Gareth Thomas, is struggling to get the details of lost IT equipment from the Cabinet Office, according to an article from Techeye.

The article reports that although he says he has received “interesting replies” from every other department, he is still waiting to hear how many computers, mobiles, Blackberrys or other piece of IT equipment were lost or stolen from 2010 through to 2012 at the Cabinet.

“I chased an answer on 16 January, expecting one on 21 January,” Thomas said. “I raised the matter at business questions on 7 February, and the Leader of the House kindly endeavoured to get me an answer, and I raised the continuing lack of an answer again on 26 March”.

The cause for the delay is not known. Missing equipment would be an embarrassment for a cabinet striving to be seen as technologically progressive.

Speaker of the House John Bercow answered that he hoped it was not necessary for Thomas to take further steps, and suggested getting in touch with the Leader of the House, and that his remarks will be “transmitted to the relevant Minister without delay”.

Perhaps our Gareth, the Shadow Minister for Standing Outside Buildings, should keep schtum re equipment loss, especially after the high profile losses by the previous maladministration.

I seem to recall Hazel Blears having a laptop nicked from her constituency office, laptops left on trains and unencrypted usb memory sticks dropped in pub carparks.

And let’s not forget the rafts of databases, cctv, surveillance, taxes, charges, fines and new offences that turned the country into an offshore prison.

Oh yes, and whose Party put in place the “tough” enhanced security at the House of Commons, No10 and government offices….. WHOOPS.

Maybe Gareth Thomas could also tell us what happened to the £305million brand new hospital that he promised us in writing back in 2005 that would be built at Northwick Park by 2010?

Perhaps the plans were on one of those lost memory sticks?
