Harrow-Based Bakkavor Fined Over H&S Breach

bak_logoBakkavor – the pizza producing company in Wealdstone, just by the Council’s waste facility on Forward Drive – has admitted breaching health and safety after being fined over an employee incident at its facility in Harrow.

Staff member Sushila Patel had the top of a finger sliced off as she was picking up dough balls being discarded from a faulty machine at the pizza production facility. As a result of the August incident, Bakkavor was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive after safety failings were identified.

Bakkavor was fined £20,000 – the maximum magistrates were able to impose, and ordered to pay a further £12,000 in costs, after admitting a breach of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations Act 1998.

A spokesperson for Bakkavor said the company takes health and safety “extremely seriously” and acknowledged the decision made by Westminster Magistrate’s Court in respect of the breach.
