Hospital radio station has a mega day at Debenhams

radio_northwick_parkVolunteers from a hospital radio station have raised over £360 at Debenhans in Harrow this month.

The team, from Radio Northwick Park, hosted the store’s seasonal fashion show earlier in the month and this weekend entertained shoppers as they hunted for bargains at the store’s mega day.

Volunteer John Sanger said: “It was great fun meeting the generous customers of Debenhams and helping to spread the word about the work done by the volunteers at Radio Northwick Park in entertaining the patients in the hospital and, hopefully, helping them towards recovery.”

The money raised comes shortly after five cyclists cycled 80 miles and raised £450 for the charity. The team – Kristian Boyles, Mark Zeila, Martin Freeland, Rich Taylor and Stewart Osborne – cycled the annual 80-mile route on Saturday 11 May.

Mark said: “We chose Radio Northwick Park due to a personal affinity that I have with the station. My aunt Diana attended the hospital for many years before she lost her battle in 2010. She loved music and got a lot of enjoyment from listening to the radio and chatting with the volunteers.”

Mark also spoke to current volunteer Zara Bryson and was touched by her enthusiasm. He said: “I know from experience, the hard work and dedication that those at the station put in. I have heard many uplifting stories of their visits to the wards and well as accounts of how they have reached out to vulnerable and sometimes lonely patients. So this year we really want to honour their hard work.”

Fundraising Officer Dan Cottrell was thrilled to hear about the team’s venture. He said: “This month has been amazing for Radio Northwick Park. The fact that this team want to raise money for Radio Northwick Park because they’ve seen how our work has a positive effect on the community is incredible. And it’s always a pleasure to fundraise along the top team at Debenhams who have kindly given us two opportunities to fundraise in their Harrow store this May. All the customers are very friendly and generous for which we are extremely grateful.”
