Volunteers Bring Christmas Cheer to Northwick Park

guest_postGuest Post…

On Monday 28th of December Kosar Pedram and volunteers including staff at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital, local residents and others visited the Care of the Elderly ward and Stroke Unit at Northwick Park Hospital.

Having worked in hospital for five years, I know too well how lonely Christmas can be for patients who are too frail to go home or have nobody to visit them. Loneliness can really affect them at this time of year especially being in hospital, which is traditionally spent with family and loved ones. Recent estimates by Age UK suggest that 650,000 to 800,000 people aged 65+ in the UK say they are always or often lonely. Therefore Inspired by a similar event at Mile End hospital encouraged myself and other volunteers to organise a similar event at our own local hospital.

Gifts were handed out to patients by Santa, paid for by the generous donation of people from all walks of life, which I am ever so grateful for. Snacks were also brought for staff and patients, mostly home baked cupcakes, generously made by Nilofar Shahrbaf, a resident of Brent. The day was a huge success in bringing happiness to staff, patients and their relatives. As Veronica, carer of one of the patient put it: “It makes a huge difference for patients to see someone cares.

Christmas has traditionally been a time of giving and patients in hospital are in great need of love and companionship. Inspired by this year and last year’s success, myself and other volunteers look forward to visiting the respected elderly every Christmas, not just at Northwick Park Hospital but other local hospitals too.
