Susan Says: What REALLY Happened to Cllr Idaikkadar?

susan_hall_150x150Last November, Harrow Council’s Labour Group proudly elected Cllr. Thaya Idaikkadar as the UK’s first Sri Lankan Council Leader. The Council’s PR machine went in to overdrive; telling us about his passion for cricket, growing his own vegetables, and his plans to cook lunch for the staff. He told us he looked forward to taking Labour ‘into the next election in 2014’. Six months later, Labour have unceremoniously ditched him in favour of Cllr. David Perry; and Harrow residents are entitled to know why.

As the Opposition, we naturally take issue with many of the terrible decisions Labour have made during Cllr. Idaikkadar’s time as Leader, but even we question whether he was given a proper chance. He’s been Leader for just one full Council meeting – during which all the Labour Group voted for his budget. And Cllr. Perry has supported every decision alongside him at Cabinet since he joined it two years ago, so why did he challenge him? Is this more about personalities than politics or leadership?

Labour are spinning that this is a private matter and an orderly transition from one Leader to another. In reality, it’s a sitting Council Leader being deposed by a party in civil war, and replaced at a hugely challenging time in the life of the Council. Harrow residents deserve to know why.
