BikeSafe – Safer Riding Training for Harrow’s Bikers

biker-ride-4-5-14-150x150Rider Skills Days give you real advice from real riders – professional police motorcyclists who love their bikes and biking as much as you do. Motorcycle KSI’s  (Killed or Seriously Injured) have fallen in recent years and in 2013 were 36 per cent lower than the 2005-09 baseline. But this area needs constant attention and more needs to be done. Provisional figures for 2014 show there were 27 motorcycle fatalities compared to 22 in 2013.

Learn more about:

  • hazard perception
  • what causes crashes
  • how to avoid being involved in a crash
  • making yourself visible

The aim of the day is simple: to help you enjoy safer biking even more. You’ll get advice that’ll make good sense to you at your stage and ability and help on where to get further training.

Who are they for?

Days are open to riders of bikes 125cc and above, regardless of experience, and their pillions.

When and where do they take place?

Days run from 08.45am to approximately 16.00pm on both weekdays and weekends at The Warren (south London), Bushey Sports Club (north London) and London Road, Romford (north-east London). They take place in all weathers apart from ice.

What do they include?

Your day will include a classroom session and an observed ride of around 60-70 miles on urban and rural roads. You’ll be given tailored feedback on topics like the safest way to corner and making yourself be seen.

How much do they cost?

For riders, the cost is £45 (or £75 for two riders booking together). This includes lunch and a free high-vis tabard. For pillions, the cost is £10 to cover lunch and refreshments.

What do I get?

At the end of the day you’ll get written feedback and a pack with offers from companies in the motorcycle community. After filling in your online evaluation form, you can print off your personalised attendance certificate.

What next?

Once you’ve completed a Rider Skills Day assessment, we encourage you to do some form of further training such as that provided by the IAM, RoSPA or DSA.

Did you know that there are discounts available for BikeSafe-London workshops for riders who are under 25? For more information please email info@bikesafeadmin.co.uk. Don’t be put off that the course is run by Police Officers, the London team are really friendly. They have loads of good advice to give on improving all aspects of your riding, no matter what bike you are on.

More details here. Some councils – thank you, Tower Hamlets, believe that this is so worthy, that they fund a limited amount of free courses with BikeSafe. If you don’t want to use Tower Hamlets’ codes, you can apparently also ask your local friendly Police motorcyclist if they have any codes that they can hand out, although, for £45 – with lunch thrown in – it’s an absolute bargain anyway!
